PGMA orders immediate relief and rehab in La Union

By Jennilyne C. Role

San Fernando City, La Union (12 October) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered last Saturday concerned agencies to expedite relief and rehabilitation assistance to areas affected by typhoon "Peping" in La Union during her emergency visit for the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) meeting here.

In particular, the President identified the most vulnerable municipalities of Sto. Tomas, Agoo, Tubao, Luna, Aringay, Naguilian and the city of San Fernando as priority areas for immediate relief assistance based on the report of affected families presented by La Union Police Director and PDCC vice-chair Col. Noli Taliño.

Also, the President instructed Nagulian mayor Abraham Rimando to look for resettlement for those great number families who lost their houses.

"I cannot afford that they will go back to their former areas that are not safe," the President said.

In agriculture, rice crops, corn, and high value commercial crops to include vegetables, mangoes, banana and root crops were devastated causing millions of damages.

"I am now ordering the Department of Agriculture to distribute palay seeds immediately to affected farmers in time for the planting season in November," PGMA said.

"This is immediate, and I want that before November 1 comes, needed palay seeds are already in the hands of the farmers," the President added.

For the infrastructure, PGMA called the attention of Department of Public Works and Highways(DPWH) – Region I director Mariano Alquiza for the immediate clearing of the Aringay town along the municipal cemetery that slides during the typhoon blocking the national highway.

"Madam President, my people are already deployed and clearing operations are on-going in that area. Likewise, the Bued Bridge (boundary between La Union and Pangasinan) whose 2 span were swiped our by strong current of water needs vital repair amounting to P80-million pesos," Alquiza reported.

"I want that all municipalities in La Union and the northern part of Luzon be accessible…I don’t want that La Union will be isolated due to that damaged bridge, so necessary temporary actions should be made the soonest possible time," PGMA said.

Alquiza replied that bailey bridge will be put up temporarily pending release of funds for the major repair of the Bued Bridge in Sison, Pangasinan.

Likewise, the President ordered Alquiza to prepare a written report for the repair of the Bued Bridge and present it, together with Police Regional Office-I Director P/Supt Ramon Gatan during the National Disaster Coordinating Council meeting on Tuesday. (PIA-RO1/La Union) [top]
