Lapus: No to extravagance at DepEd
Pasig City (12 October) -- "Observe austerity and simplicity in the offices."
The call was aired by Education Secretary Jesli Lapus to DepEd employees in the light of widespread devastation caused by Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
In a memorandum circulated to all DepEd officials and school heads, Lapus directed all employees to restrain from engaging in lavish celebrations or festivities and prohibited extravagant spending.
"The act of engaging in lavish celebrations and display of wealth at this time when the country is reeling from severe losses in lives and property is unlawful and unconscionable," Lapus explained.
He stressed that any DedEd personnel who will be found violating the order will be dealt with severely.
The country was hit by a succession of typhoons which caused unprecedented flooding in Metro Manila and substantial damage in Northern Luzon.
DepEd is currently in the thick of rehabilitation and relief work where it prioritizes the giving of aid to its affected teachers, non-teaching staff and pupils. (DepEd) [top]
