Davao technopreneur camp launched
by RG Alama
Davao City (13 October) -- Technopreneurs from Mindanao will have the chance to learn from the best and the brightest in the software industry with the SaaS (Software as a Service) Entrepreneur Camp this December 3 and 4 here in Davao City.
According to Mark Maglana, one of the camp organizers, the Saas Entrepreneur camp is a business idea competition where the winning technopreneurial team will get the chance to be funded and mentored by an angel investor from Silicon Valley.
To qualify, teams must propose a software business idea that uses the Software as a Service (SaaS) delivery model. Teams will go through a qualification process which will culminate in a workshop and final judging. Maglana said.
He added that this is NOT a business plan competition. We care more about the quality of your idea and the members of the team, not whether you have a full-blown business plan. What you need to have is a clear summary of the business concept (three pages should be enough to explain this) and more importantly, a prototype.
Software as a Service (SaaS, typically pronounced 'sass') is a model of software delivery where the vendor licenses the software for use as an on-demand service. SaaS vendors typically host their application on their own web servers, usually granting access to customers on a monthly basis.
Some examples of SaaS vendors include Morph eXchange (customer relationship management, enterprise content management), Basecamp (project management), and Vertical Response (email marketing).
Application deadline is on or before November 6, 2009 deadline.
"If you've got an idea for cutting-edge Software as a Service solution, we want to hear from you," Maglana says.
The winning team will be eligible to receive up to two years of operating capital from an investment fund to get that idea off the ground.
The camp's angel investor is Winston Gamarillo a Silicon Valley-based Filipino technopreneur who have founded successful technology start-ups. Winston currently serves his second term as International Marketing Director for the Philippine Software Industry Association, a non-profit organization that aims to promote the growth and global competitiveness of the Philippine software industry.
For those who want to join the camp you must at least form a group of 3 to 5 members and register as one team. Then Submit your business concept to Mark Maglana (email@example.com) on or before the deadline (Nov. 6 2009). If your SaaS business concept passes the preliminary screening, the organizers will notify you by email.
