Region 10 takes unified action against poverty

Cagayan de Oro City (13 October) -- A unified celebration for this year’s World Food Day on October 16, Stand up Take Action (SUTA) Against Poverty, October 16-18, and National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (NWEOP), October 17-23 will be observed in region 10.
Pacifico T. Pupos, Jr., Presidential Assistant for Northern Mindanao, said activities during these dates will focus on poverty alleviation and will start with a holy mass at the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral on October 16, followed a by a motorcade around the main thoroughfares of the city that ends up at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol Grounds.
The following activities will then be held at the said venue: Singing contest to showcase the talents of government employees and the basic sector to convey a message in fighting hunger and poverty as a universal issue by the Office of PANORMIN.
Jobs fair by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and recruitment to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to invite potential job applicants to address unemployment, giving of vitamins to infants and mothers and de-worming drugs to children by the Department of Health (DOH), milk feeding by the National Dairy Authority (NDA) and medical mission by the Philippine Army / Northern Mindanao Medical Center / Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PA / NMMC / PCSO) to improve good health.
Display of Self-Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran (SEA-K) products by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to showcase success stories of beneficiaries of major poverty reduction measures, such as, the Makamasang Tugon and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino (4P) and technology demonstrations by the Department of Agriculture (DA) on handicraft making, bangus deboning, composting and soil testing, as well as, distribution of vegetable seeds.
Discount caravan by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), rice marketing by the National Food Authority (NFA), selling of meat products by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), distribution of bangus fingerlings by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and salt fertilizer by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).
Also lined-up for October 19 is the recitation of the Universal Poverty Prayer during the flag raising ceremony in all government agencies and the SUTA Pledge in all public elementary and secondary schools to send a loud message to our leaders to take urgent action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
From October 19-23, Pupos said, the activities will include the conduct of Alternative Learning System (ALS) classes by the Department of Education (DepEd), National Household Targeting System Survey in identified areas by DSWD, briefing on entrepreneurship and simple skills training on food processing by DTI and Advocacy Training on the Installation of the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
