Oro mayor deploys firetruck to Balulang
Cagayan de Oro City (14 October) -- City Mayor Constantino "Tinnex" Jaraula formally turned over on October 13 to the barangay council of Balulang one of the five slightly-used but good running condition firetrucks donated by the city government of Tainan in Taiwan, the sister city of Cagayan de Oro.
Mayor Jaraula, assisted by city councilor Alden Bacal and city fire marshal Benigno Amomonpon Jr., handed over the firetruck's key to Balulang barangay chairman Alfredo Carcosa during the simple turnover ceremony held at the Balulang covered court.
In his brief message, Mayor Jaraula exhorted residents of Balulang to refrain from constructing illegal structures along the sidewalks and open canals so as not to cause delay when firemen respond to fire incidents and other emergency situations.
"A few minutes of delay will eventually result to huge damage of properties and even loss of lives," Mayor Jaraula explained.
Noting that barangay Balulang has grown as one of the city's fastest growing barangays, Mayor Jaraula hopes that the firetruck deployment will ensure fast and prompt response of firemen during conflagration, man-made and natural disasters and calamities.
Aside from Balulang, the Cagayan de Oro City Fire Station (COFS) recommended to Mayor Jaraula that the three units will be assigned to barangays Bulua and Macasandig and COFS headquarters while the fourth unit has yet to be assigned to a recipient barangay.
It can be recalled that the firetruck donation is considered as a major gain emanated from the sisterhood agreement entered into by and between the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Tainan, Taiwan sometime in 2005 when then Mayor and now Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano led a trade mission to Tainan.
In fact, Tainan City Mayor Hsu Tain-Tsiar and Ambassador Hsin-Hsing Wu led an 11-man delegation when they made a reciprocal visit to Cagayan de Oro City in April 2008.
After a successful two-day visit where they were feted with a special dinner and warmly received by the city officials, the Tainan city top officials pledged the five-unit firetruck donation as a show of their mutual cooperation on the sisterhood ties between the two cities.
As a gesture of welcome befitting a sister city, Mayor Hsu Tain-Tsiar and other officials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office made the honor in leading the groundbreaking ceremonies for the multi-level Legislative Building at City Hall compound before heading back home to Tainan, Taiwan.
