Food during crisis tackled in Davao Norte forum
Tagum City (15 October) -- Food problem will be tackled on October 20 during a forum on food crisis situation as part of observing the World Food Day.
Organizing committee member Tomas M. Mirafuentes of the Davao Provinces Rural Development Institutes, Inc. (DPRDI) said the event is initiated by the People"s Caucus on Food and Agriculture.
Bearing the theme: "Confronting the Food Question Amid the Crisis," the activity aims to bring together various stakeholders in Southern Mindanao and take a look at policies and programs affecting food and agriculture situation.
It also intends to determine policy gaps, come up with alternatives and initiatives to address hunger and food scarcity and arrive at a common agenda to ensure food sufficiency in the region.
Topics to be tackled during the forum include "Perspectives on State of Food and Agriculture," "Policies and Programs Affecting Food and Agriculture," and "Developing Local Agenda on Food and Agriculture."
Mirafuentes said the forum would somehow get local government officials, and those who are aspiring to be elected during the national election, to embrace food sufficiency as part of their platform of their political agenda.
Meanwhile, an exhibit showcasing agriculture products will also be held simultaneously with the forum.
Aside from DPRDI, Philippine Network of Rural Development Institutes (Philnet-RDI), Pambansang Kilusan ng Samahang Magsasaka (PAKISAMA), Social Action Ministry Diocese of Tagum, Builders for Empowerment and Human Rights Advocates Network, Development Round Table Series and the Kilusan ng mga Samahan ng Maralitang Mamamayan sa Kanayunan (KASAMAKA) are also part the People"s Caucus which organizes the forum.
The forum gets the support of the provincial government of Davao del Norte particularly the office of Sangguniang Panlalawigan board members Gregorio Facula, Jose Recarido Federiso and Leopoldo Monteroso. (PIA XI/JMDA) [top]
