Davao City (15 October) -- City Police Director Ramon Apolinario reported a 74 percent crime solution efficiency done by his office for the period January to September this year.
Apolinario cited that of the 2,875 total crimes reported during the period, 2,136 cases were solved.
Non-index crimes reported to the PNP decreased from 1,755 of last year to only 1,490 incidents for the first nine months of 2009.
"This reflects a negative variance of 265 incidents or a 15% decrease in crimes reported," he said.
Most of the apprehensions made were brought about by the implementation of special laws such as the anti-smoking law or RA 9211 wherein 966 persons were apprehended during the period.
Sixty-five persons were arrested due to the Anti Illegal Drugs Law or RA 9165, while 870 were arrested due to the Violence Against Women or RA 9262. DCPO also arrested 498 persons who violated the Child Protection Act (RA 7610), 1,012 persons apprehended for violating the No Plate No Travel Policy, and 76 persons were apprehended on illegal possession of firearms or RA 8294.
On index crimes, the office recorded 1,385 incidents with an increase of 78 percent from last year's figures.
Apolinario explained that the increase is due to the consolidation conducted by the PNP being handled by other law enforcement agencies like the National Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice, Ombudsman, and the cases reported at the barangay level.
Meanwhile, the DCPO still focuses on crime prevention as its major program since poverty and employment remain as main reasons for the commission of crime in the city. (PIA XI) [top]
