Roxas City (15 October) -- The Capiz provincial government supports the 2nd Global Hand Washing Day (GHD) on October 15 in the aim to improve child survival by drawing attention to the importance of washing hands with soap and water.
The GHD coincides with the Department of Health's (DOH) Garantisadong Pambata campaign from October 12 to 16 which promotes ways to save life of young children.
Provincial Health Office (PHO) Sanitary Inspector Jane delos Reyes said that hand washing corners were set up in various rural health units (RHU) in Capiz to sustain the province's support to global campaign to improve sanitation and hygiene.
The RHU hand washing corners has facilities like pail, hand basin, towel and soap facilitated by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) through the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
A PHO news release quoting a World Health Organization (WHO) report said that almost 2 million children die due to diarrhea all over the world each year.
A UNICEF report also indicated that more than 5,000 children die everyday from diarrhea before they reach their fifth birthday. Diarrhea is the second most common cause of death in children.
"Studies show that washing hands with soap can reduce deaths from diarrhea by almost 50 percent and deaths from acute respiratory infections by 25 percent. Handwashing with soap is the single most cost effective health intervention to prevent death and diseases that are related to diarrhea. It can save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention," the PHO news added. (PIA) [top]
