Importance of hand-washing to physical health stressed

by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (15 October) -- The Hand-washing Day activity, held October 15, is a campaign to motivate and mobilize children and adults to wash their hands with soap especially before eating and after using the toilet.

This was emphasized by Dr. Ellamae S. Divinagracia, President, Hospital Infection Control Society and chairman of of St. Paul's Hospital Infection Control Committee, during a PIA interview.

Dr. Divinagracia said that millions of deaths were recorded especially in the developing countries due to poor sanitation habits.

She said that germs can be transmitted many ways, like touching dirty hands; changing dirty diapers; through contaminated water and food ; through droplets released during a cough or a sneeze; via contaminated surfaces; and through contact with a sick person's body fluids.

"Through this hand-washing day activity, we could increase the level of awareness of the public that good hand-washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses.

Divinagracia also pointed out that the campaign should start with children because they can become agents of behavioral change.

Parents also would have significant role to teach their children of healthy habits and instill among their children the benefits of washing their hands after play, before eating, and after using the comfort room at home, in school, and in public places.

In Iloilo City the Global Hand-washing day was participated by Iloilo Doctors' Hospital; St. Paul Hospital; Iloilo Mission Hospital; Western Visayas Medical Center; West Visayas State University Medical Center and Seamen's Hospital. (PIA6) [top]
