Camiguin Island braces up for Buahanan Festival '09

by Jorie C. Valcorza

Cagayan de Oro City (16 October) -- It's October! Camiguin Island's favorite fruit will be yours for the taking as they celebrate their 30th Lanzones festival coming October 18 to 25.

Buahanan Festival (from its indigenous name buahan) celebrates the abundant harvest of the sweet fruit.

While it is available all over the Island of Mindanao and throughout the Philippines, the Lanzones of Camiguin is known for its perfection and reputed to be the sweetest in the county.

Camiguin Tourism Officer Candice Borromeo said that they had been preparing for this four months prior the celebration.

She assured that foreign and local tourists will take pleasure of the weeklong event which highlights includes lively and colorful extravaganza of cultural dances during the tableau and street dancing competition on October 24.

The soft opening of Agro-Industrial Technology Trade Fair (UGMAD) on the 18th signals the start of the 2009 Lanzones festival where the One Town One Product (OTOP) producers in the province will showcase all sorts of products and handicrafts.

The opening will also be highlighted with a Music and Kabog (bats) Showdown at the Camiguin Tourism Center.

President Arroyo is likewise expected to grace the momentous celebration. The President had, in the past, always taken time from her hectic schedule to join the people in the colorful thanksgiving festivities aimed to propel the Island's tourism program.

Other entertaining activities include the search for Mutya sa Buahanan 2009, the Festival Queen and Diwata Showdown, street parties, cultural shows and sports competition.

Meanwhile, taking pride for their buahan's distinct sweetness and juiciness, the provincial government has developed a Lanzones Park in every barangay thus allowing tourists to enjoy the luscious fruits right from the farms. (PIA-10) [top]
