Free developers from socialized housing requirement, gov't urged

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (17 October) -- Instead of developing socialized housing as part of the requirements asked from any housing developer, it is best for the city government to gather the 20 percent share from all developers and personally handle the development of the low-cost housing program.

A local developer, Martin Pineda, divulged that takers of the low-cost housing set aside by housing developers don't get what they deserve since most of these housing projects were not given much attention and utmost priority by developers.

"We would see a more efficient socialized housing if the government handles the fund and develop a housing area according to the land use program of Davao," Pineda said.

He criticized some housing projects in the city especially those along the Davao River as not carefully studied by the city planners.

Pineda suggested tighter urban planning that would emphasize on land use, zoning, density, and traffic.

"What the city has failed to focus on is the planning method while the evaluation of permit applications is rather given much attention," he added.

Meanwhile, city councilor Peter Lavina admitted that the Davao City Comprehensive Development Plan, approved 12 years ago, needs some amendments and polishing.

He stressed that the city faced considerable changes in terms of population, thereby affecting the entire landscape.

Pineda, recommends that the government provide sound community development where good schools, and health facilities are built for the community folks. (PIA XI) [top]
