PIA Press Release

92,328 Eastern Visayas families are happy recipients of 4Ps, PGMA says

Tacloban City (October 20) -- Poor families do not have to apply in order to be able to avail of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said in the one of one interview with Mr. Marvin Modelo of Bombo Radyo Tacloban.

With Secretary Esperanza Cabral of the Department of Social Welfare and Development around to back her up, President Arroyo during the regional media interview aired live via Radyo ng Bayan and Bombo Radyo Philippines, at the historic MacArthur Park in Palo, Leyte, informed that Eastern Visayas has about 92,328 families who are beneficiaries of the 4P's.

The program, the President said, is focused on the poor families in the various municipalities and provinces of the country and it is the DSWD that chooses the program beneficiaries through the conduct of a survey called the Proxy Means Test that is conducted to determine the poorest of the poor families.

The President also said that Region 8 will not be able to avail of additional slots for the 4 P's because the additional 300,000 beneficiaries will come from the other regions of the country once this is approved.

It would be recalled that the ten pilot municipalities for the 4Ps are from Northern Samar. This year, all the 25 municipalities and cities of the province of Samar have been identified as the 4P's beneficiaries.

In fact, the President was in the Region in August in order to present the cash incentives for the beneficiaries in Basey, Samar.

The DSWD Region 8 Regional Director, in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency disclosed that positive changes in the economic or spending characteristics of the beneficiaries in Northerm Samar, is very apparent.

Director Corillo said that the children of the beneficiaries are healthier and are now excited to go to school. These are positive gains of the program, Director Corillo said. (PIA 8) [top]
