Police set deadline for gun amnesty this month
Ilagan, Isabela (21 October) -- The Isabela Police Provincial Office (IPPO) here has urged holders of loose firearms to avail of the gum amnesty before the deadline on October 31.
Police Chief Inspector Roberto Bucad, IPPO's police community relations chief, said that owners of firearms with expired licenses have also until October 31 to update their firearms records to avoid criminal liability.
President Arroyo, under Executive Order 817, tasked the Philippine National Police (PNP) to account for some 1.1 million loose firearms and those whose licenses have not been renewed.
Bucad said police action will be launched against holders of loose firearms including those with expired licenses after the October 31 deadline.
The PNP will continue to receive applications for registration of loose firearms and renewal of licenses until October 31, 2009.
To beef up the recovery of loose firearms, Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno instructed the PNP to offer a reward for individuals who would help the police.
