Aklan gov cites timely forum on consumerism

by Venus G. Villanueva

Kalibo, Aklan (21 October) -- The Department of Trade and Industry's holding of a forum on Consumerism is very timely, according to Aklan governor Carlito S. Marquez.

Speaking before consumers from all sectors in the province, some local officials and the media invited by DTI-Aklan, Gov. Marquez said the forum is important to disseminate the rights of consumers especially as the Philippines as well as the rest of the world is suffering from the so-called global financial crisis.

The Forum on Consumerism was held by DTI-Aklan October 20 as one of its major activities in observance of Consumer Welfare Month and the Product Standards and Intellectual Property Rights.

Governor Marquez also stressed in his talk that even as the rights of consumers are recognized, they, just like the business establishment owners, have a social responsibility.

"Consumers have the right to select the products they want to buy, because every peso counts", the governor said. He noted, however that with the global financial crisis, some consumers tend to buy cheaper and substandard products sacrificing quality.

On the other hand,Kalibo mayor Raymar Rebaldo, who also delivered a message, thanked the DTI for holding the forum, saying the activity is a big help to local government units in formulating ordinances against substandard items sold in the province and to regulate prices of commodities here.

Mayor Rebaldo took the opportunity to urge consumers to double check their items when buying at the public market using their Kilohan ng Bayan.

He also called on consumers to buy electrical products from authorized sources to avoid accidents like fires and other hazards.

Speakers in the forum were from the Department of Health who talked on Cheaper Medicines Act/Maximum Drug Retail Price Program; PPSQFI Experts who taled on LPG Industry, Electrical Devices/Christmas Lights, Steel Bars & Plywood; and DTI-Aklan on Consumer Rights & Responsibilities/Fair Trade Laws.

After the talks, an open forum was held. Engr. Diosdado P. Cadena, DTI-Aklan Provincial Directorgave the synthesis and closing remarks. (PIA) [top]
