PIA Press Release

Donations for 'Ondoy' victims increase

by Charmaine P. Tadlas

Cagayan de Oro City (21 October) -- More and more donations from different sectors are arriving at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in region 10 to be transported to the victims of typhoon 'Ondoy'.

Martin Canguit, DSWD Supply Officer, said that as of October 15, 2009 an estimated amount of P274,202.00 was received by the social welfare office. He said that the items came from the national and local government offices, non-government offices, private entities and concerned citizens.

"Items like clothes, blankets, canned goods, and noodles were sent to us to be transported for the victims," Canguit said.

"We have already sent these items on October 9 and 15, to our Central Office in Quezon City which will be responsible in forwarding the donations to the victims," he added.

Canguit said the next shipment for the donations will be on October 21, through a Negros Navigation vessel of which the company has freely offered its service for the victims of Ondoy.

Atty. Araceli Solamillo, DSWD-10 Regional Director, said that donations are still welcomed by the office in the hope that all of Ondoy's victims will be able to benefit from the donations.

"It is humbling to know that many Filipinos have been moved to help the victims in Luzon. That is why the DSWD-10 is also doing its best to serve them by making sure that their donations will reach into the hands of the victims," Atty. Solamillo said.

Donations for the typhoon victims may be sent to the DSWD-10 office at Masterson Ave., Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.

Inquiries of such transactions can also be attended through contact numbers (088) 858-8892 and 858-8134 through the Crisis Intervention Unit. (DSWD-10) [top]
