Science awards to highlight innovation, leadership

Manila (21 October) -- A cash prize of P200,000 each awaits the winners of the 2nd Gawad LIDER (Leadership and Innovations for Development and Reforms in Science Education) Award.

This biennial search is being spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Past winners of the Gawad Lider award include the following: a) Dr. Flordeliza Mayari (Exemplary Leadership category), who has been teaching for 38 years; b) the exemplary leadership institutional award to the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology, for its flagship program; and c) the Philippine Science Centrum, and the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development.

Further, Physics teacher Virgil Samonte of the Don Eulogio de Guzman Municipal High School in La Union for devising the circuit board trainer for the easier construction of electronics devices among students.

Individuals and / or groups with sustained exemplary leadership in the field of science education and who have developed and introduced science and technology-based innovations or inventions to improve science education in the country are encouraged to submit their application.

The award has two categories, namely: 1) Exemplary Leadership Award which is given to an individual or group who/that has consistently demonstrated leadership qualities in the pursuit of an idea or a performance that generated nationwide impact on public interest in the field of science education; 2) Innovation Award which is conferred to an individual or institution who / that has introduced a science and technology-based innovation that contributed to the advancement of science education.

An innovation is defined as the enhancement of existing gadgets, equipment, device, or product or procedure that has resulted in higher efficiency, greater effectiveness, and increased productivity.

Aspirants for the award will be nominated by the head of institution, community leader, organization or individual.
