Davao police looks into Davao links of dreaded rob gang

by RG Alama

Davao City (22 October) -- The Davao City Police Office is looking into the Dabawenyo connections of the Alvin Flores gang, which recently was implicated in the daring Greenbelt 5 robbery.

According to DCPO head, Senior Superintendent Ramon Apolinario, some of their members hails from Davao and the police are on the look-out for some of these gang members who may have returned in the city and to prevent them from striking here.

Apolinario bared that the some of the gang members come from Mindanao, the lone gang member killed in the Greenbelt 5 shootout was allegedly from Cagayan de Oro City.

Last October 19, the gang posing as bomb squad entered and seized P6-million worth of luxury goods from the Rolex Store located inside the posh Greenbelt 5 mall. Two police bodyguards of Taguig Mayor Freddie Tinga engaged the robbers in a shoot-out which left one gang member dead.

The Alvin Flores gang is known to have robbed banks, warehouses and other business establishments disguised in military and police uniform and are armed with high-powered weapons.

Apolinario said that aside from investigation of these Dabawenyo gang members. The DCPO are clamping down on the use of these police and military uniforms that could be used by criminals.

He said that though there had been old regulations about the use of these uniforms still these uniforms can be easily be procured or made.

Apolinario also batted for stronger civilian cooperation as a deterrent to crime, admitting that with its present number DCPO cannot cover all of Davao. He also said that CCTV cameras are also great tools in deterring crime, as these criminals could be caught in the act and be identified. Apolinario cited Metro Manila CCTVs which are powerful cameras capable of identifying an individual's facial features. (PIA) [top]
