PIA Press Release

Bantay Lansangan volunteers to hold roadshow in Davao City Friday

Davao City (22 October) -- Bantay Lansangan (BL), a partnership of multi-sectoral organizations involved in the collective monitoring of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in its function of providing quality road sector services to the public, will hold the second leg of its Roadshow and Learning Exchanges Conference on October 22-23, 2009 at the Crown Regency Residences in Agdao, Davao City.

The two-day Davao City event is part of a series of regional roadshows designed to serve as venues to share and discuss monitoring experiences and learning of BL volunteers in the different regions and provide trainings on tools such as volunteer management, procurement monitoring, and social accountability. The BL Roadshows will also provide an opportunity to plan for the next round of road monitoring of road projects nationwide.

The first leg of the BL Roadshow was held in Iloilo City last September 24-25 where BL volunteers from the Visayas reported significant accomplishments such as the implementation of a "remove and replace" order of the DPWH to a private contractor for a defective four-kilometer portion of the Oton-Mambog Road in the province of Iloilo.

The "remove and replace" directive of the DPWH, which the road contractor performed without cost to the government, was prompted by the result of the first round of monitoring conducted by BL volunteers in Iloilo led by I-CODE, a civil society organization based in the province of Iloilo.

According to BL Executive Director Vincent Lazatin, "this development shows the improving trust and cooperation between DPWH officials and personnel and BL volunteers in the regions in terms of ensuring the quality and cost efficiency and effectiveness of government road projects."

The Davao City Roadshow, which is also a training-workshop, will be mainly participated by BL volunteers from Mindanao who will be joined by guest volunteers from Luzon and the Visayas for the sharing of their respective monitoring experiences and learning.

One of the highlights of the Roadshow is a dialogue between BL volunteers and DPWH regional directors from Mindanao, where first round of monitoring findings and problems encountered will be presented and resolution on how to move forward with the second round of monitoring will be formulated.

After the dialogue, a press conference will be conducted where selected BL volunteers and DPWH officials will sit as panelists to share project updates and answer questions from the media. (pr/PNOG) [top]
