Tacloban City (October 24) -- As the government troopers under the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army continues to sustain campaign against the elements of the communist terrorists in Eastern Visayas, encounters with the communist terrorists happen every now and then in the hinterlands of the Samar Island.

Just recently, the troopers of the 63rd Infantry Battalion led by Sgt. Saldavia were on a security operation at about 3:00 o' clock in the afternoon of October 23, when they encountered an undetermined number of communist terrorists at the vicinity of Barangay Capotoan, Las Navas, Northern Samar.

This was reported by Colonel Armand Rico, information officer of the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army.

Firefight ensued and lasted for about ten minutes after which the elements of the communist terrorists scampered in various directions.

Col. Rico disclosed that no casualty was reported on both the side of the government and the communist insurgents.

The military recovered at the scene two (2) homemade shotguns, personal belongings of the communist terrorists, and subversive documents of high intelligence value.

Col. Rico said that the troopers are still in the area conducting hot pursuit and clearing operations in order to ensure the safety of the residents in the area. (PIA 8) [top]
