NVizcaya poll exec says voters' turnout to increase in 2010 elections

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (October 28) -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) here is pinning hope that the automated mode of elections and the support of the youth sector in the countrywide poll in May 2010 will eventually raise the turnout of voters.

"With the unified efforts and vigilance of the youth sector and with the adoption of the automated polling scheme, our voters' turnout in Nueva Vizcaya will increase from 80 to 90 percent," said Lawyer Abraham Asuncion, Comelec provincial officer on Wednesday at the provincial capitol building function room here.

Speaking before media practitioners during the ‘Taripnong',(gathering) a monthly media forum conducted by the Philippine Information Agency(PIA) and the provincial government here said the activism of the youth in the country is a big factor in encouraging voters in their sector.

He cited the youth movements now being organized in several universities and colleges in the province which seeks to promote vigilance and responsibility in ensuring the peaceful and credible conduct of the 2010 elections.

One of these movements is the "Ako Ang Simula" which encourages unregistered youths to join the list of voters in preparation for the 2010 elections and beyond.

Asuncion also noted the extended period and the faster and improved procedures employed in the conduct of the 2010 elections through the use of the Precinct Code Optical Scan(PCOS) which will provide sufficient time for voters in casting their votes

"We will proceed with the full automated elections using 82,000 PCOS in 80,000 clustered precincts nationwide at 1,000 maximum voters per precinct," Asuncion added.

The election executive also stressed that the manual mode of election canvassing will still be adopted as the last resort mode by the Comelec if lawful solutions and alternatives allowed under the automated poll system parameters will no longer be available.

He said they will do everything that is legally necessary to have a complete, credible, just and fair elections. (bme/PIA NVizcaya) [top]
