DOST seminar focuses on radiation hazards

by Tess Superioridad Baluyos

Cagayan de Oro City (29 October) -- "Radiation hazards is the main topic of a series of seminar that will gather stakeholders, science teachers and students," says Regional Director Alfonso Alamban of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in region 10.

Director Alamban further said that the activity is part of the project, "Nuclear Safety Caravan," which is an information, education and communication program to enhance the public understanding of radiation hazards.

It will also touch on the necessary regulatory control to ensure safe application of radiation and radioactive materials in the country.

The seminar will be conducted by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), an agency under DOST, on November 4 and 5.

Speakers from PNRI-Manila will also tackle the fundamentals of radiation, including the safety and security of radioactive sources in the Philippines.

Further, there will be a film showing on radioactive waste management and a demonstration on radiation detection instruments will follow.

Expected to attend the seminar are about 100 participants coming from different schools, LGUs, and other government agencies in Cagayan de Oro City and Region 10.

For confirmation of attendance, please contact Ms. Arlene Inocando of DOST-10, at telephone numbers 858-39-31/72-38-02. (DOST) [top]
