Zambo Norte BFAR still bans shellfish gathering at Murciellagos Bay

Dipolog City (30 October) -- Although the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) felt the impact of its earlier order to ban shellfish gathering at the Murciellagos Bay area, BAFR provincial head Engr. Joseph Florig recently reiterated that such order is still in force.

The ban has affected 80 percent of shell gatherers and vendors from barangays Nangka and Mabunao in Rizal town.

Gathering of seashells in other places not affected by red tide toxins also slowed down as the consumers refrained from buying the same.

Unless BFAR will declare the Murciellagos Bay safe from red tide toxins, fishermen are still prohibited to gather any kind of shells from the area.

Earlier, shells gathered from Sibutad and Rizal town in Zamboanga del Norte as well as those from Sapangdalaga and Baliangao municipalities in Misamis Occidental tested positive for red tide toxins. Two deaths were also reported due to red tide poisoning. (PF-PIA-ZN) [top]
