Puno wants towns clustered for typhoon rescue operations

Dagupan City (30 October) -- Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo V. Puno visited Pangasinan yesterday to personally assess the preparations being made by the province as typhoon "Santi" threatens to pass thru Central Luzon during the weekend.

"Pangasinan is prepared already in terms of relief operations…you have already set general evacuation plans, but what we plan to do is put up advanced rescue centers kasi ang ikokoncentrate ngayon is saving lives," Puno said during a briefing at the provincial disaster coordinating council quarters in Lingayen.

He suggested the clustering of towns where higher areas, he said, can be used as rescue staging areas.

Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. in reaction instructed Police Provincial Director Percival Barba to direct chiefs of police to identify the high ground in the clusters for more efficient rescue and relief operations in case of any eventuality.

"We have already instructed all our mayors to identify high or elevated areas in their municipalities, which they reported already, and now we know where and when to help them," the governor said. He added, "yung bilin namin sa kanila is to provide even yung mga basic things like flashlight, candles, matches, petroleum and others."

"Ang order namin sa kanila, umulan lang ng diretso kahit isang oras, lipatan na agad at alam naming kung saan sila tutulungan. We saw to it that these selected areas ay makakarating ang tulong," he said.

PDCC executive officer Paterno Orduña said that the PDCC has been on heightened alert and already prepositioning its limited assets and resources to respond to any emergency situation.

PNP Regional Director Ramon Gatan informed Puno that the RDCC and the PNP had met with the officials of the San Roque Dam and the Napocor to clarify the communication system between them, the PDCC and all police stations. He said all issues have been made clear and well defined.

Puno said DILG now is more prepared to send resources to affected areas than before. (PIO/PIA Pangasinan) [top]
