Region I grabs national honors in science and campus journalism tilts

SAN FERNANDO CITY (Mar 8) -- Region I students brought home last February honors not only for their school and themselves but for the region in the field of science and campus journalism competition at the national level.
Dr. Wilma Labrador, regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd), said that the Ilocos region delegates earned the rank of fourth runner-up overall in the first national science quiz and science fair and ranked 2nd in the campus journalism congress held in Pedro Guevarra Memorial National High School in Sta. Cruz, Laguna last February 4-6.
In the science fair category, major awards were garnered by the Mangaldan National High School, the Mother Goose Special Science School System of Dagupan City, San Nicolas National High School of Ilocos Norte, Regional Science high School of La Union and Urdaneta City National High School of Urdaneta.
The young scientists who pitted skills and talents with the best and the brightest from the 16 regions in the country are the following: Science Quiz: Alec Prince Cleofe, Grade III pupil of Catbangen Central School, La Union - 4th place; Ana Sophia Montemayor, Grade IV of Bolinao Central School, Pangasinan - 5th place; Sir Vince Ezekiel Millondaga of Bayambang Central School - 5th place; Jeremiah Foronda, Grade VI of Cabaroan Elementary School, La Union - 5th place; Glen Carlos Gabrillo of La Union National High School, La Union - 3rd place and Jeyrold Abon of Daniel Maramba National High School, Pangasinan - 5th place.
Awardees in the Science Fair, Team Category, include Art Ephraim abalos, Ricobel John Soriano, Esterlyn Alemanya of Mangaldan National High School, Pangasinan - 2nd place; Kristine Soriano and Lorraine Vallo of Mother Goose Science School, Dagupan City - 4th place; Kristine Badua, San Nicolas National High School, Ilocos Norte - 5th place; Jed Moses Nugal of Regional Science High School, La Union - 3rd place; Richard Myrick Arellaga, Archie Montemayor and Samuel Pedro of Urdaneta City National High School, Pangasinan - 4th place.
Outstanding pen pushers from Region I during the 2004 National School Press Conference (NSPC) held last February 23-27 in Sta. Cruz, Laguna consistently figured among the best over-all finish in the individual category, Secondary Level, where, out of 16 participating regions, Region 1 ranked 2nd.
Leading the pack of individual winners is Geraldine A. Dacanay of Central II Elementary School, San Carlos City, Pangasinan who won first place in Feature Writing (Filipino), Bernice Rivera of ASSAT, La Union - 2nd place in Photojournalism (Filipino); Jefferson Rivera of ASSAT, La Union and Ellen Manoling of MMSU, Laoag City won 2nd and 3rd place in Photojournalism (English), respectively.
Other winners are Jennifer Gonzalve of Bugayong Integrated School, Pangasinan - 3rd place in Copyreading and Headline Writing (Filipino), Precious Anne Natata, Agno Central School, Pangasinan - 7th place in Copyreading and Headline Writing (Filipino); Reinavell Jennesse Mateo of MMSU-LES, Laoag City - 8th place in Copyreading and Headline Writing (English); Janine Caselyn Butay of Shamrock Elementary School, Laoag City - 10th place in Newsriting (Filipino); Krystel Elaine Dorao of Lorma Grade School, La Union and Camille Angelie de Lara of Solsona Community Elementary School, Ilocos Norte - 8th and 10th place in Photojournalism (Filipino), respectively.
