Region IX welcomes 2005 peacefully

Zamboanga City (Jan. 5) -– Just when everybody expects to hear reports of people being rushed to the hospital due to firecracker-related accidents, the police has reported a peaceful and safe celebration of the New Year here in the region.

In a phone interview, Police Southwestern Mindanao Area Command Chief Director Vidal E. Querol disclosed that there were only a few victims of firecracker explosion and a single victim of a stray bullet.

The peaceful celebration was attributed to the stern warning from Director Querol to people, policemen and civilian alike, not to fire their guns on New Year’s Eve or they would face the consequences of their action. He also stressed that the success of the peaceful celebration of New Year was also because of the close coordination of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the local officials in the whole region.

Before the celebration of the Christmas Eve, Querol issued a directive to all police personnel in the region to cover the muzzle of their issued firearms with tape. They were only allowed to remove it if there is a need to protect life and property or if the situation dictates it.

Querol has already directed City Police Director Sr. Supt. Mario B. Yanga to investigate and track down the culprit of the lone case of stray bullet incident. (Z.C. Infocenter) [top]
