Panabo barangays get access to clean water

Davao City (19 January) -- Residents of Barangay Manay and Mabunao in Panabo City can kiss their water woes goodbye with the inauguration of a multi-million Barangay Environment and Sanitation Program (BESP) in their respective communities yesterday.
Led by Panabo City Mayor Rey Gavina, together with top City officials and project implementing officers the two communities finally saw the operation of a World-Bank financed waterworks program designed to supply clean and potable water to far-flung communities.
The BSEP involves the improvement of the present waterworks system or if non-existent entails the development of a new one.
Barangay Manay a 54.5-meter deep well was developed complemented by a 3.0 horsepower submersible pump which can draw 21 ps. of water pressure, two pumping stations were constructed with a designed capacity of 3.24lps which also houses the disinfection facilities consisting of a hypochlorinator. A 75 cu meter elevated steel tank was installed to support the existing 10 cubic meter elevated concrete tank.
The Manay BSEP system serves 214 household units whiler 80 units of septic vault and superstructure were installed. The 24-hour water system costs around P6.1 million.
In Barangay Mabunao a long-time waterless barangay, a P5.1 million waterworks facility was installed. Among these include the rehabilitation of an existing well with a depth of 109 meters, installation of a 5hp pump powered by a single phase power supply to give a 2.1 lps and 1.5 horsepower booster pump. One pumping station with a capacity of 2.1 lps was constructed to house the systemís disinfection facilities consisting of a hypochlorinator with a capacity of 12.6 gpd.
The BSEP in Mabunao services 196 units of household connection while 149 septic vault and toilet superstructure were installed.
Engr. Zoilo Gudin Jr., Panabo City Planning and Development officer and Project Management Unit Coordinator of the Barangay Environment and Sanitation Program said that the construction of the two waterworks system was the Cityís response to the identified need of the two barangays during the yearly Minimum Basic Needs Survey which was an adequate supply of clean and potable drinking water supply.
With the operation of the BSEP waterworks program in Barangays Manay and Mabunao boasts of an adequate supply of drinking water with a quality comparable to that of Dumoy drinking water. (PIA) [top]
