Commentary: Does conscience snowball?

By Aurora J. Casimpan

Tacloban City (8 August) -- The measure of a man's worth is his conscience, every man to his conscience. Here comes now Richard Garcia, who must have gone into a lot of conscience-seeking and has finally found enlightenment. Upon reflection, Garcia must have found out that the greater glory lies not in lying and the destruction of lives but in the preservation of order and the unity of the country.

The whistleblower is blowing his whistle in another direction - the right path of direction. To the place where right means clarifying the reasons for his mud-sling on the President and her family. It put to light who were the operators against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of which the consequence is the divisiveness in the country and the slowing down of economic growth.

The battle over good and evil was conquered by Garcia with the good prevailing over evil. Likewise, the machination of the gods "deus ex machina", the gods being the opposition, was exposed to its fullest and foulest. It only shows that the opposition would never hesitate to manipulate human beings and events to gain power and control of the country for themselves.

Who is to blame for this expose - the conscience of Garcia or the arrogance of the opposition? The opposition who does not stop to think that every human being is possessed of goodness - that in the end it will always be the side of good which will prevail. Is the opposition blinded by their arrogance of being above ordinary men that everyman they manipulate for their use will one day wake up and shake off the bad feeling of being a puppet?

Hopefully, the others, the likes of Sandra Cam and Wilfredo Mayor, will one day look to their conscience and redirect themselves to follow the path Richard Garcia has taken - to clarify why they cast their lots with the opposition. Such an unselfish act will surely surge the country forward in terms of socio-political and economic reforms and development for the country and our people.

Better yet, will the conscience of Garcia produce a snowball effect on other whistleblowers and - the opposition? (PIA-8) [top]
