PIA Press Release

Banna wins Best Pamilihang Bayan search anew

LAOAG CITY (12 August) -- Banna romped off with the best market award for the second time in a row with an average percentile score of 93.04% besting "Class A" public markets of Laoag City (91.886) and Batac (87.46%).

Banna posted an early victory among the 23 contending municipalities and city in the province for the first monitoring conducted by the provincial search team (PST) from July 7-14 and maintained its lead even in the surprise visits that followed.

The PST was composed of representatives from the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Provincial Health Office (PHO), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Philippine Information agency (PIA).

The performance of the public markets were evaluated based on the following criteria: provision of consumer welfare desk as a venue for consumers to air their complaints; price boards that are regularly updated and accurate; provision of Timabangan ng Bayan which are accessible to consumers, placing of price tags and the like.

The winners will be given certificates and cash awards of P30,000, P20,000, and P10,000 for the first, second, and third place respectively.

The top three Pamilihang Bayan ng Lalawigan will vie for the regional and national level with the awarding slated in October, in time with the Consumer Protection Month celebration.

This national program, now on its second year is aimed at generating wider and heightened awareness on trade laws with the ultimate aim of protecting the consuming public.

Burgos and Solsona came in second and third in the initial search but were ranked fifth and eight for this year. (PIA Ilocos) [top]
