PGMA OTOP project underway in Ilocos Sur

By Freddie G. Lazaro

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (26 August) - At least seven products were initially identified by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the seven towns and cities in Ilocos Sur after the recently concluded implementation of the first phase of the one town one product program (OTOP) of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo here.

Recently, DTI Provincial Director Grace R. Lapastora disclosed the six major product of the towns and cities as follows: Longganiza for Vigan City, Calamay for Candon City, Vinegar in Sta. Maria town, furniture in San Vicente town, Squash Noodles in Sto. Domingo town, bolo in Santa town and cattle fattening in Sta. Catalina town.

According to Lapastora, the OTOP program is one of the key elements in achieving sustainable economic growth in the countryside, which aims to promote entrepreneurship and create income opportunities for all, especially the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the province.

The DTI together with other concerned national government agencies, local government units, and the private sectors, continuous to remain focused on providing the MSMEs with a comprehensive package of assistance under the program, she told.

Lapastora informed that their staff are presently conducting the second phase of the OTOP program in which they are having a massive information campaign convincing local leaders of every town in province to choose major product recognizing their place.

After the information campaign, the DTI is expecting that every town in the province had already identified their own major product, considering that based of the then cultural history of the Ilocos Sur, each town then had one recognized product.

It was learned that after the identification of the product in every town, support assistance and loan assistance would be given to the identified producers and beneficiaries with the help of the DTI, the Quedancor, the Land Bank and other Government Financial Institutions (GFIs).
