Innovative packaging pushed for novel banana products

Davao City (3 December) -- The Packaging Research & Development Center of the Philippines (PRDCP) of the Department of Science & Technology-Industrial Technology & Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) launched a project entitled " Development of Appropriate & Innovative Packaging for Banana Products." The project will provide assistance to SMEs by creating new markets for various Philippine banana products, primarily by developing an appropriate and innovative packaging system and participation in international fairs.

PRDCP chose Region XI to be part of the project because it is among the leading banana producers and manufacturers in the country. In order to formally inform the public about this new project on bananas, the Department of Science and Technology in Region XI (DOST-XI) in cooperation with the PRDCP held a consultative meeting with the banana stakeholders of the region last November 18, 2005 at DOST XI office. It was attended by the players in the banana business. Daisy Taņafranca, program leader of the Packaging R&D Center of DOST-ITDI, headed the consultative forum.

The project seeks to increase the competitiveness and marketability of banana products both for domestic and export markets by developing appropriate packaging. It also seeks to inspire the banana chips producers to diversify from their traditional sweetened flavored banana chips to other varieties and flavors. Banana producers and manufacturers are encouraged to think of other exciting ways and means to process bananas, such as banana turon, boiled banana, pinagsugbo, banana sauce, grilled bananas and other novel products from bananas. a new product and technology is being worked out with SAGREX Foods, Inc. (DOST XI) [top]
