'Pasko Fiesta' kicks off with exciting events line-up

Davao City (3 December) -- Pasko Fiesta sa Dabaw, the annual month-long celebration of Christmas festivities in various barangays in the city, will kick off on Monday, 05 December 2005, 4 PM at the Rizal Park, starting with the awarding of outstanding city youth organized by the Sangguniang Kabataan and the launching of "Linggo ng Kabataan".

Highlight of the event is the lighting up of the Christmas tree and simultaneous switching on of Christmas lights along the City Hall area by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte at 6 PM. This will be followed by a musical entertainment by various local talents, including the Mutya ng Dabaw and Hiyas sa Kadayawan winners, and top local bands.

The "Pasko Fiesta" celebration is divided into two categories, "PAHIYAS" and "PASUNDAYAG," which are composed of various barangay-based contests shaowcasing the craftsmanship, creativity, and skillful performances of the Davaoeños.

"PAHIYAS" category will hold the "Dayan-dayan sa Barangay" (contest of Christmas barangay, village or subdivision, festively decorated with belen, Christmas tree and arch), "Paskong Kahoy sa Parke" (Christmas tree making and decorating contest), and "Parolan sa Pasko" (competition of Christmas lanterns) competitions.

The "PASUNDAYAG" category is composed of two major activities, "Hugna sa Kadalanan" and "Hugna sa mga Distrito".

For "Hugna sa Kadalanan," the line-up of events are "Baktas Karakas" (street band competition using portable musical instruments like drums and lyre/bugle corps, brass bands and indigenous instruments), "Dasig Sayaw" (cheer dance competition on the streets), and "RONDALSAYAsaKALSADA" (rondalla music playing and dancing showdown competition);

While "Hugna sa mga Distrito" will have various district-based competitions, such as "Panayegon sa Kanhiay" (Filipino Christmas folk caroling contest for elders who are at least 30 years old), "Panayegon sa mga Bata" (contemporary Christmas caroling contest for children from 7-13 years old), "Panayegon Binatan-on" (Christmas caroling contest for teens 14 years up to adults not more than 29 years old), "Sayaw Inidaran" (dance competition with Christmas melody for older citizens), "Sayaw Binatan-on" (modern dance competition with Christmas melody for age 14-29 years old),

"Sayaw sa mga Bata" (modern dance competition with Christmas melody for children 7-13 years old), "Kanta Pasko sa mga Hamtong" (amateur Christmas singing contest for adults and teens 14 years old and up), "Kanta Pasko sa mga Bulilit" (amateur singing contest for children up to 13 years old), and "Bituon sa Banagbanag: SCQ Senior Citizen Quest" (personality search for senior citizens, male and female, where they will compete for talent, wit and personality).

There will also be various Christmas special events all throughout the month, such as the "PAMASKO: The Annual SM City Davao Mindanao-Wide Chorale Competition (a competition of open to all chorale groups in Mindanao to sing the contest piece "For Unto Us, A Child is Born and two warm up songs of their choice), Pasko Fiesta Concert with Cueshe and Sheree of Viva Hot Babes, "Halad sa Pasko: Christmas Concert of 300 Voices," and more.

This month-long Christmas celebration aims to promote Davao City as an ideal place to visit, shop and enjoy the Yuletide season. Most importantly, these activities aims to foster unity, promote happiness and nurture a culture of peace among local residents and visitors. It will also bring to the fore the creativity of the Davaoeños through visual and performing arts and promote intra-tourism among barangays. (PIA) [top]
