Church calls for national days of prayer

Tacloban City (5 December) -- Sunday churchgoers in the different parishes of the Archdiocese of Palo listened to the Pastoral Letter every priest read during the sermon urging the people to observe December 5-7 as National Days of Prayer and Fasting.

The Pastoral Letter stated that in view of the current problems besetting the country today, from political bickering to the threat of terrorism and the dreaded avian flu disease, the Church thought it fitting to observe three days as National Days of Prayer and Fasting.

Earlier, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines exhorts the people to pray for political peace.

A pre-Christmas Gathering of key political personalities is being planned by Church leaders and Catholic groups during the annual Philippine National Prayer breakfast set at the Manila Hotel on December 7.

Former Eastern Samar Representative Jose Tan Ramirez, the group's executive director said that the atmosphere would be neither confrontational nor political when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo meets both her allies and foes.

He said that the organizers from the Philippine National Prayer Breakfast Foundation headed by former DILG Secretary Jose Lina vowed that the event will seek to touch the hearts and minds of the national leaders for God and for the good of all the people of the country.

It will be non-political, non-partisan, Regina Ordoņez, the group's secretary said.

During the breakfast biblical passages will be read corresponding to specific themes as reconciliation, justice, peace and repentance.

Invited to the gathering aside from President Arroyo are former presidents Corazon Aquino and Fidel Ramos, Speaker Jose de Venecia, Senators Aquilino Pimentel and Panfilo Lacson, Congressmen Francis Escudero and Alan Peter Cayetano. Also invited are lthe members of the Hyatt 10 and Mike Velarde.

Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the CBCP will deliver the keynote speech on the theme "Tansforming the Nation through Servant Leadership." (PIA 8) [top]
