Dumaguete City (5 December) -- The provinces of Cebu and Oriental Negros have registered the highest cases of child labor in Central Visayas.
This was disclosed by Atty. Rodolfo Sabulao, Director, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Central Visayas.
Atty. Sabulao explained that child laborers are hired to work in sugarcane plantations while some of the child workers from Oriental Negros are hired to work in deep sea fishing or paaling.
In Cebu, children are hired to work with pyrotechnics manufacturers, says Sabulao.
Sabulao however failed to give the exact rate on child labor in the said provinces. He said that based on a study conducted by the University of San Carlos, the provinces of Negros Oriental and Cebu are among the provinces with high child labor cases.
On the other hand, the regional director acknowledged the efforts of the local government units in Negros Oriental headed by Governor George Arnaiz in combating child labor. (PIA) [top]
