Community radio in Diwalwal to operate soon

By Mai B. Gevera

Davao City (23 December) -- A community radio will soon operate in Mount Diwata, Diwalwal to answer the low level of awareness and information of the residents as studied by the Task Force Diwalwal, under the Information, Education, and Communication Component.

The task force is also tasked to develop and implement a public information program to generate awareness on the situation among target audiences that would enhance public confidence on the efforts of the government in protecting and preserving Diwalwal.

Communication problems in the said community includes the lack of awareness among the residents on the importance of the protection, development, and management of the environment as well as understanding the need to involve the indigenous peoples in various socio-economic activities.

With the operation of a community radio, residents would then be offered a wide array of opportunities from livelihood, to health practices, from maintaining peace and order to the protection and management of the environment.

The local government of Monkayo prioritizes communication as a needed tool for development.

Monkayo Information officer Joan Pintal bared the LGU's willingness to push for the operation of a community radio in the said mining haven.

It is set to materialize next year as Monkayo representatives along with the Task Force Diwalwal Information component headed by Philippine Information Agency Assistant Director General for South-Central and Western Mindanao Efren Elbanbuena initiated a site visit in the community radio operating in Malita, Davao del Sur.

The team used the said radio station as its model in materializing the plans to build Diwalwal's very own community radio.

Pintal claimed that financial requirements for the radio station are already in place as most of the government officials especially the mayor and board members are the ones pushing for the realization of such. (PIA) [top]
