Tagum to stage "Event of the Year" boxing
By Romy Sabaldan
Davao City (23 December) -- BOXING as in Taekwondo and the other focus sports badly needs the support not only of the government but also the private sector.
This was the main line of discussion at the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP) Davao which had the personalities of Tagum boxing as guests in the Tuesday edition of the sports writers forum at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
"What previously ills RP sports is the lack of support from the public coupled with the favoritism of Manila coaches in choosing who to compose the national teams", Vic Adriano said this as he explained that such practices were RP sports main opponents in its struggle for national recognition.
Adriano is currently in the thick of the campaign to revive professional boxing in Davao del Norte with a scheduled big boxing event on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at the University of Mindanao Gym in Tagum.
The event is being promoted by Attorney Cris Dan Bangoy with the support of the whole Vice Mayors League of Davao del Norte, says Jojo Padua of the Bagoy Promotions during the same media forum.
Cris Besmanos, current Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) Jr. Flyweight champion also graced the same occasion with a promise to knock down Rolan Estancia of Maragusan, main challenger to Besmanos' PBF crown.
The Tagum boxing matches promise to be the "Event of the Year" in the professional ranks, says Adriano, who is also the boxing manager of the PBF Jr. flyweight champion. (PIA-SP-RS) [top]
