Davao City all set for 25th year celebration of the ATF

by Sheryll Jane B. Sanico

Davao City (23 December) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo personally chose Davao City as the host for this year's Asean Tourism Forum 2006. This big event will be from January 13 to 21, with the theme: "Celebrating the many faces of ASEAN".

A Philippine Host Committee (PHC) was organized to plan and prepare the programme for the forthcoming event. This committee is headed by Tourism Secretary Ace Durano by virtue of Memorandum Order 189 by the president.

Locally, the Davao Host Council (DHC) also held various programme and venue inspections and meetings to ensure the smooth celebration of the upcoming ATF 2006.

Beautification works on the city is now in progress.. The DHC is also producing "Madayaw" magazine, a travel guide of the city for easy reference of the delegates.

Two big events have been prepared for the occasion. One of which is the "Fun in Paradise" fun games on the 17th at the Paradise Island Resort. The other is the Mindanao Trade Expo on the 13th to 21st at the SM City. The Mindanao Trade Expo will showcase the region's best in handicrafts, garments, furnitures and antiques among others. This is organized by the Mindanao Trade Expo Foundation in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). This is also made possible by the DHC.

Furthermore, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Mactan International Airport and Davao International Airport are all set to welcome the participants.

Oscar Palabyab, DOT undersecretary and PHC vice-chair stated in ATF Update (a newsletter published for the ATF) that all operational problems have been addressed to ensure the success of the coming ATF on January. Failure is no longer in their vocabularies.

Expected attendees for the ATF 2006 are 1,800 (international) and 1,200 (national). Nations expected to participate in the event are: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei and Laos. Also people from Europe, Australia, Middle East, South Africa, Canada, South America, Japan, India/Pakistan, China, South Korea, Egypt, Russia and Turkey are expected.
