Bad garbage habits cause flooding - CENRO
By Rose Palacio
Davao City (30 December) -- Garbage is still the main cause of flooding. Residents should learn and understand that they themselves are victims of their own bad habits.
With rains falling almost nightly, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) chief Ann Silvosa said the city's drainage lines are clogged with discarded waste such as cellophane bags, bottles, plastics, papers and other garbage.
This, despite the sustained information drive on proper waste disposal in the barangays, public markets, the Bucana area, and in slum improvement and resettlement (SIR) areas.
Residents seem to just merely ignore the government's call to clean up their own surroundings, declog their own canals of waste materials to prevent flooding.
Silvosa called on barangay captains to enjoin their own constituents to dispose of their waste properly and correctly.
Purok leaders should also create their own "youth brigadas" for weekened cleanups, she said.
This way, the youth sector will be concerned of their surroundings and be part of a clean city, Silvosa said. (PIA) [top]
