Good governance key to victory - Bunye

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (30 June) -- "Get the people to our side through good governance and social justice", said Presidential spokesman & Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye as he urged members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other law enforcers to continue its efforts in wiping out terrorists and rebel insurgents.

Rebel insurgents has done enough in setting back peace and development for more than 30 years. They have been given all the chances to return to the parliamentary road through peace negotiations.

In Davao region, Philippine National Police XI Director Ricardo Quinto stressed that the PNP shall follow orders from the President as Commander-in-Chief of the AFP,and we will fight terrorism through a combination of military operations, law enforcement and pro-poor programs to get the people to its side and mop up the mass base of government enemies.

"The Government fight against rebel-insurgents will be enforced as ordered by the President with adherence to the rules of law as embodied under our Constitution and the full respect of constitutional rights, Director Quinto said.

"We still continue on calling for the rebel groups to give up and return to the folds of the law. The government will treat them with justice and (if qualified) reintegrate them into the social mainstream| he added.

Meantime, National security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said the ongoing government campaign against rebel insurgents has no connection at all with the killing of leftist leaders, which the government condemns in the strongest terms.

The targets of government's campaign are the armed rebels who continue to employ force and terror to achieve their political aims.

President Arroyo is determined to accomplish what past administrations have failed to do and she has the full support of the AFP, law enforcers and the Filipino people who wish for a lasting peace in the country. (PIA) [top]
