Free medical services offered in celebration of DavNor anniversary

by JMD Abangan

TAGUM CITY (30 June) -- Employees at the provincial capitol of Davao del Norte Wednesday put down their pens and left their work to take advantage of the free-of-charge medical services just a few steps away from their offices.

Right at the lobby of the Provincial Capitol, the Provincial Health Office brought closer to employees, clients, and nearby residents as well, its medical services in an activity dubbed as "Handog Pasasalamat sa Kapitoloyo."

It was part of the week-long celebration of the 39th celebration of Araw ng Davao del Norte, simultaneously held with the provinces of Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur.

Some of the medical services were circumcision; preventive nephrology through mass urine screening; mass stool examination which included de-worming and treatment of schistosomiasis; and dermatology and skin disorder screening including leprosy screening.

Medical consultation was free including cardiovascular screening and blood chemistry to determine levels of cholesterol, blood sugar and uric acid.

Medical service particularly for men were screening on prostate enlargement and prostate cancer while that for women were breast cancer screening and papsmear.

"This was made possible through pooling of resources of the PHO and the district hospitals of Kapalong, Carmen and Samal. We also got assistance from the Davao Medical Center and the Davao Regional Hospital," PHO chief Dr. Agapito Hornido said.

The medical outreach activity is made annually every founding anniversary of the province. "But we have delivered a lot more services this time as requested from us," he said.

Dr. Hornido saw the need to build and promote a healthy workplace and develop a health-seeking behavior among employees of the provincial government through an activity such as this.

"We do not know that our employees are suffering from certain disease or having an ailment unless he or she is (medically) examined," he said. "Some may have renal failure or cardiovascular disease without showing symptoms," he added.

Aside from enjoying free medical services, employees and clients of the Provincial Capitol benefited from free medicines given them after medical consultation and screening.

Other than the medical outreach activity, the 39th Araw ng Davao del Norte also features Banakon Trail Challenge, motocross competition, Alay Lakad, dog-fun watch and breed show.

A Eucharistic mass to be officiated by Most Reveren Wilfredo D. Manlapaz will be held on the day of the founding anniversary, July 1, at the Provincial capitol lobby at 7:30 in the morning. (PIA) [top]
