PNP-Cateel goes after logging mastermind
Davao City (5 September) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) chief of Cateel, Davao Oriental Rod de los Reyes vowed to file appropriate charges against the truck owner and the truck driver of the ten-wheeler truck carrying illegally cut Lawaan on August 20, 2006.
This he bared after confirming that indeed, those logs were illegal, as proven by the certification of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Homicide through reckless imprudence can be filed against the driver, known as a certain Bobby, and the truck owner, known as Proping.
The Cateel_PNP is just waiting for the certification from the Land Transportation Office (LTO), to identify the registered truck owner.
De los Reyes said that such will be the documentary evidence he needs for the filing of the cases.
He also admitted that illegal logging really exists in the municipality of Cateel, and illegal loggers are using different schemes in their operations.
Others were able to escape from the law, as they were able to successfully transport the illegal logs.
It was learned that one factor why the operation continues is that there are many government entities that are involved in the said illegal operation.
De los Reyes wanted to capture the "minds" behind the illegal logging operations, and not just those being paid to do the logging.
The tragedy in Aliwagwag Bridge nearing midnight of August 20 claimed 9 lives, all residents of Compostella Valley Province.
The truck came from Yapsay, Cateel, going to Comval Province.
The signature campaign asking for the stoppage of all logging operations in Cateel started last week.
More support is expected for the said endeavor. (PIA-XI and DXHM) [top]
