Commentary: Filipinos tired of military adventurism
By Jennilyne O. Casimiro
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (25 September) -- The Filipino nation, suffered much of the political bickering, coup attempts, street rallies and economic downfall have denounced further undemocratic activities in the country.
The pains of the past will always be a pass, serving as lessons not to duplicate it again. The remnants of the Martial Law will be history, our armor to fight for any attempt to unleash similar event in the future. The Filipinos will always remember the atrocities it has brought and will not allow the country descend the depths of a dictatorship again.
The case of the military take-over in Thailand led by Army commander in Chief Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratklin, prompting for the exile of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is a different situation now in the country.
We already established political stability, an armed service loyal to the Constitution proven by various failed coup attempts, the duly constituted authority and to the President as commander in chief.
We have staged economic take-off, institutionalized peace process and development which the people are enjoying now.
As always, we believe that coup attempts will only destroy the fruits we are enjoying now. So, why sacrifice again when we are reaping now the gains of our unity and cooperation as a whole?
Any attempt therefore to launch for a drastic move like a coup will never prosper in the country because they will never win the support of the people whose main goal now is providing a better future for the next generation to come. (PIA I) [top]
