Parents of malnourished children train on goat milk production

Naval, Biliran (28 September) -- Some 35 parents of malnourished children from two barangays in the municipality of Naval, Biliran as identified by the municipal nutrition council (MNC) underwent a 2-day training on goat milk production recently.
This was bared by Ms. Nascencia Abad, Municipal Agricultural Officer (MAO) in an interview with PIA who said that after the training, some 27 hybrid goats for milking will be purchased by the local government unit (LGU) of Naval for care and distribution to the beneficiaries as this will be the source of fresh milk to be given to their malnourished children.
As one of the identified projects in line with the implementation of the nutrition program of the municipality, Ms. Abad further declared that the training on goat milk production is seen to contribute to a great deal in eradicating the malnutrition problem in the municipality particularly in the two barangays of Libtong and Villa Caneja which have high incidence of malnutrition.
She added that for her office to be able to get the best breed of goats for milk production purposes they have consulted the livestock section of the Department of Agriculture which in turn made recommendations that that they should purchase goat breeders and male goats from the provincial veterinary office in Cagayan de Oro city in region 10.
As of now, she said, documents are being prepared for the immediate procurement of said farm animals.
Furthermore, she said that part of the training of the participants is that they will be taught on the most sanitary procedures of milk collection and extraction from the goat breeders to preserve the freshness of the dairy product and retain its nutritional contents.
Moreover, she said that aside from the ready source of fresh milk for the family may be sold by the beneficiaries to augment the family income.
Even as the celebration of nutrition month in July is over, the efforts of the municipal nutrition council (MNC) to monitor the nutritional status of children in the municipality of Naval continues throughout the year.
It was learned that Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Roselyn Paras of Naval is strongly supporting the nutrition program of the municipality.
As a gesture of support to the program, she donated her salary as SB member to finance the feeding programs of identified barangays in the municipality to avert malnutrition.
Part of the year-round activities of the Naval MNC to campaign for good nutrition among children, barangay pulong-pulong are conducted on schedule to orient parents especially the mothers on the preparation of nutritious food for children. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
