Military helps in delivery of basic services to people

Tacloban City (October 2) -- In line with the vital role of the military in the attainment of the government's pursuit for Peace and Development, the 19th Infantry (Commando) Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Lope C. Dagoy based at Kananga, Leyte, recently conducted Free Medical and Dental Check Up (MEDCAP) in three municipalities of Northwest Leyte.

Conducted in coordination with the World Vision Northwest Leyte, a foreign funded NGO whose mission is to promote the welfare of the people, most specially those families identified as the poorest of the poor, Medical and Dental Operations are regularly being conducted by the military to complement the efforts of local government units and national line agencies concerned with the delivery of essential and basic services to the people especially the disadvantaged.

Lt. Col. Dagoy revealed that the World Vision sponsored the free and medical dental check up with the assistance of both the regular and reserved component of the Philippine Army, the 19th IB based in Aguiting, Kananga, Leyte and the 8RCDG in Camp Dawnes, Ormoc City.

The first MEDCAP was conducted on July 17 at the Gymnasium of Merida, Leyte, where about 449 beneficiaries received free medicines provided by World Vision. All beneficiaries belong to poor families coming from eleven (11) clustered barangays of the said municipality. The second, was on 22nd day of July 2006 at Barangay Camp Downes, Ormoc City where 539 poor people benefited in the same activity coming from eight (8) clustered barangays of Ormoc City. The third was in the municipality of Matag-ob, Leyte, on the 3rd day of August 2006 held at the municipal gymnasium where 457 poor people coming from eleven (11) clustered barangays of said municipality also received free medical services and also dental services. Moreover, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Matag-ob headed by Hon. Michael Torrevillas also shared its resources by providing dental facilities, equipment and medicines which were personally attended by Dra. Ibony Ragasa, the Municipal Health Officer and her staff.

The success of these MEDCAP activities were made possible through the efforts of the following well meaning people of Leyte, as follows: Mrs Solidad Dunayce as Chairwoman World Vision Northwest Leyte; Mrs Thelma Mejares, Ormoc City social worker; Miss Ann Loraine Narboada, social worker of Merida; Miss Evelyn Sabirada social worker of Matag- ob; and Miss Mildred Matol, project coordinator, who insured the availability of the needed medicines.

The complementary participation of the the 19th infantry Battalion, the 8th Regional Community Defense Group headed by Col. Manuel S Marcon, the 8th Infantry Division Medical Team headed by Lt. Col. Maritha G Toleran made the activities more meaningful and has shown the ability of the Philippine Army to demonstrate its concern not only in the field of combat operation as a means to secure the people, but also through humanitarian activities such as this one.

Ltc Dagoy stressed that his unit, in behalf of the Philippine army, will continue to extend its cooperation to the noble programs of the World Vision that provided a commendable framework of extending assistance to our needy citizens especially those in the countryside who are directly exposed to the menace of communist insurgency that every peace loving Leyte˝os so abhor.

"This is our modest way of showing our concern to the people of Leyte with whom we share the common aspiration for a peaceful community worthy of progress and development", Lt. Col. Dagoy concluded. (PIA 8) [top]
