Students should be vigilant in reporting any crime - Dureza

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (10 October) -- The youth, especially the students, should help the government in its effort in maintaining a peaceful community and that the Department of Education should educate the youth about the need to be vigilant in reporting to 911 any crime that they witness being committed, is about to be committed or has been committed.

Davao City Councilor Jimmy Dureza, chair of the peace and order committee said community involvement is among the key element indispensable to the success of the war against criminality.

"Every citizen should be aware that they should care for their respective community, not turning a blind eye to crime, but by reporting them and cooperating with local authorities or law enforcers", Dureza said.

He said that one way where the youth can be involved the governments efforts to fight criminality is through their participation in anti-crime or prohibited drug organizations and by reporting crime through the Emergency line 911.

"Students should learn the value of volunteerism, civic consciousness and self-reliance in the fight against crime as well as make them aware of the adverse effects of illegal drugs, alcoholism and other ills of society that usually plague the youth," Dureza said.

"While it is necessary for our young to be fully informed about their constitutional rights, they can safeguard and advance these rights. There is a need for our students to learn that community and school involvement and participation is one tool our society can use to succeed in putting criminals behind bars and keeping the streets and their homes safe", he added.

Councilor Dureza said that the sustained involvement of the youth, especially the students is very important for the success of the war against criminalities. (PIA-XI) [top]
