PNP intensifies counter-terrorism campaign in all fronts

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (11 October) -- The Philippine National Police in region eleven is continuously intensifying its anti terrorism campaign.

"We have put in place necessary measures to secure vital projects and infrastructure including vital installations and safeguard lives of the people," PNP XI Director Ricardo Quinto said.

"The government is relentlessly purging out insurgents in the country. With the government consistent and effective battle against terrorism, we will be able to achieve an ideal and peaceful atmosphere in every region and including a sound economy, Director Quinto added.

The government and the PNP regional office condemned the latest act of terrorism that occurred in Bacolod City International airport in Silay City.

According to Quinto, with the continued terror threat, legislators would speed up the passage of the proposed Anti-terrorism bill because the bill will complement and greatly augment the government's unrelenting anti-terrorism campaign.

"We need to assume a proactive stance in so far as the problem of insurgency is concerned. That is why even in areas where insurgency is not a concern, pro-action is still one of the best option in the fight against terrorism", he said.

"We have to continuously plan for a more dynamic or operative role in targeting this multidimensional problem on insurgency," he added.

Director Quinto said the PNP is forging closer partnerships with the local government units, other military forces and are mobilizing communities to solve the root causes of the decades-old rebellion following the signing by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of Executive Order No. 546 which gives the PNP a more active support role in internal security.

EO 546 also requires local chief executives to incorporate a counter-insurgency component in their integrated public safety plans. (PIA-XI) [top]
