Bulusan volcano explodes anew

Sorsogon City (13 October) -- Bulusan Volcano exploded ashes anew up to three-kilometer high from its main crater at 5:16 p.m. Monday, October 9, over two months after its alert level was lowered to 1 from level 3 in April this year.
Lando Guardacasa, Phivolcs resident volcanologist in this city, said that ashfalls hit the villages between Irosin and Bulusan towns since the wind direction during the phreatic explosion moved eastward of Sorsogon province.
Guardacasa said that Phivolcs is still to observe further if Bulusan had again elevated its abnormal stage after it simmered down for over two months until its explosion on Monday.
He said that Phivolcs had to observe further whether the phreatic explosion could start anew Bulusan's abnormal condition.
Mount Bulusan went back to life as it started to belch ashes in March this year and the phreatic eruption episode was extended up to July, a condition that led to the forced evacuation of some 3,000 families from the five towns surrounding the Sorsogon volcano.
Bulusan volcano's ash explosion on Monday came a week after Mount Mayon's alert level was lowered to 2, after its five-step alert status was raised to 4 from August 7 till September 20.
Mt. Mayon and Mt. Bulusan are two active volcanoes in Bicol which are merely 80 kilometers apart. (PIA Sorsogon) [top]
