Mayors to host sustainable upland development summit
Davao City (14 October) -- The National Summit on Hunger and Population – Mitigating Hunger through Sustainable Upland Development and Population Management of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) will be on October 24-25, 2006 at the Manila Hotel, Manila.
Sustainable Upland Development (SUD) will be a major theme on the agenda and mayors nationwide will discuss the merits of a national policy on SUD. They would push for the implementation of a SUD model that has been tested in 38 municipalities in Southern Mindanao with support from the European Union funded Upland Development Programme (UDP), executed by the Department of Agriculture.
“It is high time that a national policy on sustainable upland development is executed that will ensure sustainable agriculture and forest protection and management in the uplands through participatory land use planning,” LMP national President Ramon N. Guico Jr. asserted.
The Summit follows the LMP Island Conferences of the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao chapters held earlier this year where the mayors resolved to push for a national policy on sustainable upland development.
Certain barangays and municipalities in the provinces of Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Sarangani and South Cotabato have already implemented the SUD Model through the assistance of UDP.
The UDP is a special project executed by the Department of Agriculture and supported by a grant from the European Union. (UDP/PIA XI) [top]
