DOST opens scholarship grant

By Pops Gumana

General Santos City (20 October) -- In respond to the demand for competent technical manpower in the global arena, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is currently implementing the Science and Technology Undergraduate Scholarship Program, which financially supports talented and deserving high school graduates to pursue careers in industrial technology.

According to Raymundo Pecajas, Officer-In-Charge of Sarangani-Gensan Provincial Science and Technology Center, they are offering two types of scholarship grants for school year 2007-2008 namely: S & T Scholarship R.A. 7687, and the DOST-SEI (Science Education Institute) Merit for scholars who will be trained in the different accredited Technical Education Institutions nationwide.

Pecajas said that an applicant should pass the general criteria of eligibility before availing the scholarship.

"One should belong to the top 5% of the high school graduating class or must be a member of the graduating class of DOST-SEI identified or DepEd-recognized science high school," he disclosed.

He emphasized that an applicant must also be a natural born Filipino citizen; with good moral character and in good health; a resident of the municipality for the last 4 years as attested by the barangay/school records; and a qualifier of the 2007 S&T Scholarship Examination in order to qualify for both types of scholarship.

However, under RA 7687 scholarship, he clarified that the socio-economic status of the applicant is considered a vital factor.

"Both parents should have an annual income of not more than P150, 600 to qualify since what we are giving priority here are the poor, but talented deserving students," he said.

Meanwhile, the deadline for filing of scholarship application forms and the examination date are scheduled November 10 and December 3, 2006, respectively.

DOST XII Regional Director, Dr. Zenaida P. HR Laidan, in a statement, revealed that qualified applicants are the current graduating fourth year high school students, and those who have graduated from high school but have not yet taken any college unit and any DOST-SEI S&T Scholarship Examination.

"Those who have applied for resident/immigrant status in the USA or any country are disqualified," she further said.

Moreover, Pecajas said that upon completion of the course, the awardee shall serve in the country for a minimum period equivalent to the length of time he/she enjoyed the scholarship. "This means the scholar will not be allowed to work abroad right after graduation unless he has served the country for a specified time. Otherwise, he/she will pay back the amount spent by the government for his/her schooling."

"So, we are encouraging deserving students of Sarangani Province and General Santos City to take this very rare opportunity as we are training individuals who will become part of the country's much needed workforce," Pecajas added. (PIA SarGen) [top]
