Davao City (8 November) -- There was an overwhelming response of Dabawenyos willing to become foster parents and ready to host the delegates to the National Youth Day (NYD) starting today (November 8 until November 12) in Davao City.
This was bared by Princess Bacon, NYD media relation and promotions committee during the Kapehan sa Dabaw held last Monday at Krua Thai at SM City, who said that some 7,900 families enrolled as foster parents in the different parishes within Davao City.
Recent figure of delegates already reached over 7,000 short of the projected 10,000 delegates to NYD 2006.
"Marami talagang nagrespond sa call kaya lang kumonti ang nagparegister but we are still hoping more will join as registration is extended until Wednesday," she said.
In a briefing with foster parents at Lourdes Parish in Bangkal, Fr. Voltaire Dimol stressed that hosting is not mere giving accommodation to a participant but allowing the delegate to interact and become as one of the members of the family.
"As foster parents you will also evangelize them and you are part of the mission of God's gathering of the youth," he said.
The youth, he said are called in a gathering where they could share their mission and strengthened their spirituality.
He urged the families to just be with their usual activities in their homes no frills but only what the family can offer to them.
"Accept them with love and kindness in the natural way that you can offer to the youth," he added.
The NYD housing program is designed to create an avenue for family interaction among the delegates and their parents and enhance belongingness and sustain culture of care, trust and prayer within the family.
The first activity with the foster parents is a family lunch today (November 8) before proceeding to an assembly of the rest of the delegates in their assigned parishes. The day's activity will be capped with a dinner and parish welcome.
NYD activities among others include Catechesis at the catechetical sites at the Ateneo de Davao University - Matina Campus, University of the Immaculate Concepcion College, Bajada Campus and the Holy Cross of Davao College.
There will also be tracks and conferences and youth festival at the catechetical sites, faith sharing where methodologies include workshops, groups discussions, and threatre performances.
On the fourth day will be the Pilgrim Walk, Closing Mass followed by a dinner at Central Venue and the Youth Jam.
Sunday (November 12) will be dedicated to the day with the foster families with an option to usher their adopted kids to a "Suroy-suroy sa Dabaw".
The annual celebration of the NYD was proposed by the late Jaime Cardinal Sin to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines General Assembly and later approved the Church-wide celebration beginning December 16, 1986 which happened in Manila from 1987 to 1990 and starting 1991 the NYD was celebrated in the different parishes and dioceses.
It will be Davao City's first hosting and this year's theme is "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path". (PIA XI) [top]
