Zambo Norte braces for El Nino onslaught

By Franklin P. Gumapon

Dipolog City (20 November) -- Mitigating measures against the onslaught of El Nino phenomenon are now in place, according to the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) of Zamboanga del Norte.

Agriculturist Maybelle Bustalino of OPA disclosed that the farmers in the province were already advised to start planting their crops before the onset of the dry spell, which the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAG-ASA) predicted to start in December this year.

The farmers were also told to apply mulching on their plants by placing dried leaves or rice stalks around the base of each plant to maintain soil moisture.

PAG-ASA officer-in-charge Prisco D. Nilo has earlier issued a weather forecast on the recurrence of El Nino phenomenon, which is likely to affect northern and western Luzon, northern Panay Island, southern Cebu, western Bohol, Zamboanga provinces, CARAGA, and some parts OF Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and South Cotabato.

"The continuance of anomalous warming in the equatorial Pacific through the early part of 2007 is expected to affect rainfall patterns in the country that could adversely affect domestic water supply, agriculture and hydro power generation," PAG-ASA advisory said. (PIA) [top]
